Taking a break from social media—again

Yes, I think I’ve decided to take another break from social media for the rest of the year.

Why?

First, I’ve just been tired of reading the negative rhetoric on Twitter/X, mostly around AI, the job market, and politics in general. I’ve also noticed myself getting a bit negative there too, especially around these subjects. Not that some of it isn’t warranted, but it’s mostly out of response to what I’m seeing there. Secondly because it’s been distracting: somewhere I can go to entertain myself when I should be focusing on my pivot. I already have YouTube as a distraction—oh how I wish I could quit you—Twitter/X has just multiplied my distractions. Lastly, because I simply don’t really believe in it: It used to be where all the cool kids were, but now it (social media) is just a place where I am fed algo-generated bullshit. I’m not sure why I’m there TBH, other than to react to what the algo feeds me—because that’s what I’m doing! The rhetoric around AI and the job market is especially frustrating and depressing: it’s enough that I have to deal with it in real life, I don’t need it reminding me everyday!

Also there’s been the usual shit-posts on social media lately, usually the kind of shit Elon posts—just focusing on all the negativity in the world, and it’s not the kind of information I need to be focusing on now.

It’s purely a coincidence that I will be taking time off around the same time I did last year, or maybe I just get tired of it around September every year? So I won’t be posting, I won’t be consuming—I might login just to check my messages here and there—but the apps are being deleted and I am just not going to be around until next year at least. And yes this includes LinkedIn, unless I start looking for jobs there.

That mean’s I will be posting here!

That’s another reason I think I need to make an exit: I need to focus more on posting here, where what I have to say is about what I am actually doing, not what I am reacting to.
